How to Decide Between a ChatGPT Subscription and a Claude Subscription

Tuesday, 22 September 2026.

Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5.

Ninety minutes later, OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, as TechCrunch reported on launch day.

Call it what it is.

THE war of AI giants racing towards superintelligence.

Nineteen days earlier, OpenAI had launched GPT-6 Astra and described it as the world’s most intelligent and aligned model.

Six days earlier, Anthropic had merged Claude chat and Claude Cowork into a single Claude that works out what a task needs.

So if you pay twenty, a hundred or two hundred dollars a month for either product, the ground under your subscription moved three times in three weeks.

I’ll admit, I was conflicted.

I was so in awe of GPT-6 Astra, I almost changed my subscription.

Then Opus 5.5 dropped.

And everything changed.

Decoding The Model Lineups: Astra, Sol, Terra, Luna Vs Fable, Opus, Sonnet, Haiku

Both companies name their models like astronomers.

Both companies also hide which model you are actually talking to.

Start with OpenAI.

GPT-6 Astra is the flagship, GPT-6 Sol is the everyday workhorse, and GPT-6 Luna is the cheap, fast volume model.

Here is the trap.

In the regular ChatGPT chat window, Astra appears under a different name, GPT-6 Pro, and only on eligible plans.

The same help article says Plus gets Astra inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, while paid chat runs on GPT-5.6 Sol with a Thinking slider.

And OpenAI’s own launch post states that GPT-6 Sol and Luna are not yet available in Chat at all.

One more wrinkle, buried in a footnote.

OpenAI says the GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT Chat is slightly different from the version in the API, Work and Codex.

There is a fourth OpenAI model most comparisons forget, and it needs three qualifications.

GPT-5.6 Terra sits between Sol and Luna in the GPT-5.6 family, and OpenAI cut its API price to $2 in and $12 out on 30 July.

First, it is still a GPT-5.6 model, and OpenAI’s GPT-6 family announcements name only Astra, Sol and Luna.

Second, it never appears in the chat window, because OpenAI offers it only in ChatGPT Work and Codex, where Free and Go users get Terra and paid users can choose it alongside other models.

Third, GPT-6 Sol now lists at $2 in and $10 out, so on list price alone GPT Terra 5.6 costs more per output token than the newer and stronger Sol.

Now Anthropic.

Opus 5.5 is the new flagship for daily work, and Anthropic says it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work – which is completely mind-blowing!

Fable 5.1 still sits above it, having arrived on 1 September.

It shares its underlying model with the restricted Mythos 5.1, which OpenAI’s own footnotes describe as Fable with fewer safeguards.

On Pro, Fable runs on usage credits rather than your plan allowance.

Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 remain the mid and small tiers.

Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are announced, with Anthropic saying only that they will follow in the coming weeks.

No price, no date, no benchmark.

But if the performance of Opus 5.5 is a predictive factor:

Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 should blow Sol and Luna out of consideration – except on price.

Heavyweight Bout: GPT-6 Astra Vs Claude Opus 5.5

Why pit Opus 5.5 against Astra instead of Fable 5.1?

Because Opus 5.5 is what a Claude subscriber actually gets, and Fable costs extra on Pro.

Why Opus 5.5 Dominates

Both flagships can do things that would have sounded like science fiction two years ago.

Every item in that list is vendor-reported.

So let me put the vendor numbers next to the independent ones.

Anthropic’s launch table shows Opus 5.5 at 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 against Astra’s 57.9%, with Astra’s figure taken from OpenAI.

A nine-point knockout, then?

Nope!

Artificial Analysis ran the same benchmark itself and measured 60% for Opus 5.5 and 59% for Astra.

One point.

Where Opus 5.5 does win clearly is professional work.

On GDPval-AA v2.1, covering real tasks across 44 occupations, the same comparison page shows Opus 5.5 at 1846 Elo and Astra at 1542.

On AA-Briefcase, the private multi-week knowledge-work test, it is 1822 against 1569.

On Humanity’s Last Exam it is 61% against 55%, and on SciCode 67% against 56%.

Where Astra Still Wins

Astra wins GDP.pdf, the professional-document test, 31% to 26%.

Astra is also dramatically leaner, using roughly 27,000 output tokens per index task where Opus 5.5 at max effort uses about 119,000.

Good news — Opus 5.5 is far cheaper per token, at $4 and $20 per million against Astra’s $10 and $50.

Bad news — at max effort it burns so many more tokens that Astra finishes an average index task for $3.26 while Opus 5.5 needs $5.98.

Anthropic counters that at its default medium effort, Opus 5.5 beats Astra’s best FrontierCode score for about a fifth of the cost per task.

That is a vendor claim, and it points to the real lesson.

The effort setting you choose moves the result as much as the model you choose.

The Upcoming Workhorse War: GPT-6 Sol And Luna Vs Sonnet And Haiku (5.5 on the Way!)

This is where most of your daily tokens actually go.

And this is where OpenAI is ahead today – for now.

GPT-6 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5 carry the identical list price of $2 in and $10 out per million tokens.

On the current Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, GPT-6 Sol at max effort scores 48 while Luna stays at 37.

Claude Sonnet 5 at max effort scores 38, at $5.09 per index task.

Sol does its index task for $1.06, and Luna for seven cents.

Luna, at ten cents per million input tokens, sits one point behind Anthropic’s mid-tier model.

And Haiku 4.5 costs ten times Luna’s list price, at $1 in and $5 out.

If you meet GPT-5.6 Terra in Work or Codex on a Free or Go account, treat it as a capable stopgap rather than a reason to pick ChatGPT, because Sol now undercuts it on price.

Having said that, Sol and Luna are not flawless.

Artificial Analysis found that both regress on GDPval-AA, with Sol dropping about 100 Elo and Luna about 75, driven by shorter deliverables that omit required elements.

The same analysis found real progress on facts, with Sol’s hallucination rate falling from 92% to 60%, largely because it declines to answer more often.

GPT-6 Sol and Luna both hallucinate less than their predecessors at max effort

Chart: “GPT-6 Sol and Luna both hallucinate less than their predecessors at max effort.” Source: Artificial Analysis, GPT-6 Sol and Luna analysis, 22 September 2026.

And remember the naming trap, because Sol and Luna live in Work, Codex and the API, and have not reached the chat window yet.

What about Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5?

Anthropic promises many of the same improvements to performance, efficiency, and safety that Opus 5.5 received.

If that promise holds, the mid-tier gap could close quickly.

My confidence that it closes fully or even overtakes: very high.

Because Opus 5.5 is the world’s best LLM right now – and Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 should not disappoint, given Anthropic’s track record!

What Artificial Analysis Actually Says

But first — what the heck is the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index anyway?

It is an independent composite score.

Version 4.3.2 blends ten evaluations: AA-Briefcase, GDPval-AA, AutomationBench-AA, Terminal-Bench 4.0, SciCode, Humanity’s Last Exam, GDP.pdf, CritPt, AA-Omniscience and AA-LCR.

The version number matters more than most articles admit.

OpenAI’s Astra launch page quotes Intelligence Index v4.1.1, on which Astra scored 61.2 and Fable 5.1 scored 65.7.

The Decoder notes that Artificial Analysis was previously criticised for rating Astra too low on outdated benchmarks, and that two benchmark updates followed.

So the only fair comparison is one version, one date.

Here is v4.3.2, as published on 22 and 23 September 2026.

Model (effort)AA Intelligence Index v4.3.2Cost per index task
Claude Opus 5.5 (max, default fallback)58$5.98
GPT-6 Astra (max)53$3.26
Claude Fable 5.1 (max, with fallback)53Not verified
GPT-6 Sol (max)48$1.06
Claude Sonnet 5 (max)38$5.09
GPT-6 Luna (max)37$0.07

Chart: Artificial Analysis publishes the live Intelligence Index, cost-per-task and token-use charts for this matchup on its Opus 5.5 vs GPT-6 Astra comparison page. Source: Artificial Analysis.

Two details change how you should read that table.

1. “Default fallback” is not decoration.

Opus 5.5 ships with safeguards that transparently fall back to another model on some cyber, biology and AI-development tasks, and Artificial Analysis names the configuration accordingly.

2. Astra rules the cost frontier.

Artificial Analysis found that every Astra effort level, from $0.82 per task at low to $3.26 at max, sits on the intelligence-versus-cost frontier, and that Astra ties Fable 5.1 on the Coding Agent Index at about 60% of the cost.

ChatGPT Work Vs Claude Cowork: Which Agent Actually Finishes The Job

This is the product fight that decides who owns your working day.

ChatGPT Work launched in July as an agent that acts across your apps and files and can stay with a project for hours.

It connects through plugins for Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs and project trackers.

You can point it at a specific app by typing “@” and the app’s name.

It builds sheets, slides, docs and shareable Sites, and its Scheduled Tasks run once, on a timetable or when an event fires.

On the plan table, Work is limited to the desktop app on Free and Go, and runs on desktop, web and mobile from Plus.

Claude’s answer is no longer a separate app.

Since 16 September, Cowork and chat are one Claude, and you can hand over a report due at noon and close your laptop while Claude keeps working.

By default, Claude asks before taking an action, and you can switch it to check in only when something needs a closer look.

Your chats, projects, connectors and skills carry across, and you can schedule a job to run at the time and the day you choose.

The rollout reaches Pro and Max over several weeks, with Team and Free to follow and Enterprise admins getting at least 30 days’ notice.

Here is the structural difference nobody puts on a slide.

On ChatGPT, Work and Codex share one allowance, separate from Chat, and that allowance can be bounded by a five-hour window and a weekly window at the same time.

On Claude, everything draws from one pool, including Claude Code, with a rolling five-hour session and weekly limits on top.

Both agents depend on infrastructure that fails.

On 3 September, Claude suffered an incident of roughly three hours, while a routing error took ChatGPT and Codex offline for about 35 minutes the same morning.

On OpenAI’s side, the Astra rollout into Work and Codex was staggered, and OpenAI handed out banked usage resets for every day paying users waited.

My read is that ChatGPT Work has the wider plugin surface and Sites.

Claude has the stronger knowledge-work model under the hood and a simpler meter.

Claude Design, Docs And Slides Vs ChatGPT Sites And Images

If your deliverable is something people look at, this section decides your subscription.

Claude Design, Slides and Docs are included from the Pro plan up.

Docs lets multiple colleagues edit a document in real time, with Claude drafting sections and commenting alongside human editors.

Slides can be presented straight from Claude or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF, and everything lives at one shareable link.

ChatGPT’s answer is Sites, which turns work into an interactive site or web app you share by URL and can keep updated as data changes.

OpenAI also says Astra is its best model for adhering to existing slide templates, and that it can create, host and share websites, web apps and games through Sites.

Then comes the gap no workaround closes.

ChatGPT generates images, with image generation with Thinking on Plus and above.

Claude’s plan table lists no image generator at all.

Video generation appears on neither company’s plan table.

At this point, the comparison is nuanced.

One Claude Vs The ChatGPT Superapp

Both companies want to be the one app you open for everything.

They are taking different routes.

Anthropic merged chat and Cowork into one conversation and put Design inside it, while Claude Code remains a separate product for now.

The same Fortune report describes OpenAI’s plan to fold ChatGPT, Codex and potentially its Atlas browser into a single superapp.

Today the ChatGPT desktop app carries Work, Codex and a built-in browser on every plan.

I have coined a term for what remains — the Two-Pool Problem.

ChatGPT unified the window, but Chat and Work-plus-Codex still meter against separate allowances, and access to Astra in Work does not give you GPT-6 Pro in Chat.

Claude unified the meter.

That simplicity has a cost too.

When Claude decides a quick question has become a long-running task, that work draws from the same pool as your chats and your coding.

And in a month when Claude’s biggest complaint was usage limits, that detail matters more than any interface.

Five differences matter most.

1. Everyday chat volume. ChatGPT offers unlimited everyday text chats on every tier, within abuse guardrails, while Claude publishes no fixed message count.

2. Image generation. ChatGPT has it and Claude does not.

3. Knowledge-work output. Claude pairs the stronger GDPval model with Design, Slides and co-edited Docs.

4. The meter. One pool on Claude, two on ChatGPT.

5. Ads. Anthropic has pledged to keep Claude free of advertising, while OpenAI’s Go plan may include ads.

20 Professions, and Which Subscription(s) to Use for Each of Them

Now for the core: which subscription is best for your profession?

Read on to find out!

1. Coders in General: Claude Code Vs Codex, And The Quota Math

Backend, systems and platform engineers, and anyone who lives inside a large codebase.

The pick: A tie, decided by your budget and your repository.

Why.

The quota math.

Codex shares an allowance with Work, separate from Chat, and Plus already includes Astra in Codex.

Claude Code draws from the same pool as your chats, and since 14 September that pool is 17% smaller than during the summer promotion.

Fable 5.1 is the expensive trap, with one Max 20× subscriber reporting it crossed 80% of his limit on a single task.

Your workflow.

Watch out: Astra in Codex needs Codex CLI 0.153.0 or newer.

Plans: ChatGPT Plus ($20) or Pro $100 with Codex, or Claude Max 5× ($100).

Confidence: Moderate.

2. Full-Stack Developers: Build In Claude, Let Astra Click Every Button

Web and mobile developers who own the database, the API and the interface.

The pick: Claude Max 5× for building, with ChatGPT Plus as your QA sidekick.

Why Claude builds better.

Why ChatGPT tests better.

Your workflow.

  • Scaffold and refactor in Claude Code on Opus 5.5 at medium effort, reaching for Fable only for architecture reviews.
  • Deploy a preview, then hand the URL to Astra in ChatGPT Work with a click-through test script and an accessibility checklist.
  • Prototype throwaway ideas as an Artifact or a Site before writing production code.
  • Price the AI features you ship at API rates: GPT-6 Sol at $2 and $10 per million tokens, Luna at $0.10 and $0.50 for high-volume jobs.

Watch out: at max effort Opus 5.5 used about 119,000 output tokens per index task against Astra’s 27,000, so keep max for the (very) hard problems.

Plans: Claude Max 5× ($100) plus ChatGPT Plus ($20).

Confidence: Moderate.

3. AI Engineers: Route By Task, Not By Brand

Ah, the big one!

Engineers building products on the APIs, not just using the apps.

The pick: Both, through the API, behind a router.

The price ladder you route across (per million tokens, in / out).

Engineering details that bite.

Your workflow.

  • Build an evaluation set from your own traffic before choosing, because published indexes change between versions.
  • Start every route at medium effort and measure cost per task, never per token.
  • Keep a second provider live, because 3 September took both down the same morning.

Plans: API accounts on both, plus Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro for your own coding agent.

Confidence: High on routing across both; moderate on the specific defaults, which should definitely change once Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 roll out!

4. Generative AI Specialists: You Need Both, And A Spreadsheet

Prompt engineers, AI trainers, workflow designers, and the internal champions everyone else asks.

The pick: Both, starting with Claude Pro plus ChatGPT Plus.

Why both.

Your workflow.

  • Keep a living model matrix covering model, plan, surface (Chat, Work, Codex, Claude Code), effort level, and cost per task.
  • Package your best prompts as Skills on both platforms so every team inherits them.
  • Re-run the same five real tasks from your organisation whenever a model ships, because September alone brought GPT-6 Astra, Sol, Luna, Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5.
  • Teach people the meters: two pools on ChatGPT, one on Claude, and banked or saved resets on both sides.
  • Follow vendor incident posts, and use Tibo Sottiaux’s named-defects postmortem as your template for internal model-quality reports.

Plans: Claude Pro ($20) plus ChatGPT Plus ($20), upgrading whichever you outgrow first.

Confidence: High.

5. Writers: Clarity Beats Horsepower

Authors, journalists, editors, copywriters, and documentation teams.

The pick: Claude Pro.

Why.

Your workflow.

  • Build one Claude Project per publication or book, holding your style guide, a glossary, and three samples of your best work, available on every plan.
  • Outline and draft in Claude, then give it your house rules as a checklist for the edit pass.
  • Use ChatGPT Go or Free, with unlimited everyday text chats, as an unmetered sparring partner for headlines and angles.
  • For documentation teams, keep drafts in Claude Docs so every reviewer comments in one place.

Watch out: Claude publishes no fixed message count, and a long editing session can hit the five-hour window.

Plans: Claude Pro $20 per month, plus a free ChatGPT account.

Confidence: High.

6. SEO Professionals: Research Wide, Write Tight

Technical SEOs, content strategists and search-marketing agencies.

The pick: ChatGPT Plus as the research and reporting base, with Claude Pro for the content itself.

Why ChatGPT for research and monitoring.

Why Claude for the content.

Your workflow.

  • Run the keyword and competitor sweep in ChatGPT deep research and export the findings to Sheets.
  • Write the content brief and first draft in a Claude Project holding your brand voice, entity list and internal-link map.
  • Audit key templates with ChatGPT’s built-in browser or Claude in Chrome, and let code execution parse your crawl exports.
  • Schedule a weekly rankings-and-traffic summary as a ChatGPT task.

Watch out: neither assistant sees your live rankings or analytics unless you connect that data, so verify every statistic before it goes live.

Plans: ChatGPT Plus ($20) plus Claude Pro ($20).

Confidence: Moderate.

7. Marketers: Pictures Sell, So Start With ChatGPT

Brand, content, social, performance, and product marketers.

The pick: ChatGPT Plus, adding Claude Pro if you build decks every week.

Why.

Your workflow.

  • Generate ten ad variants and three image concepts per brief in ChatGPT, then shortlist by hand.
  • Stand up the launch page as a Site and schedule a weekly performance recap as a task.
  • Write positioning documents and quarterly plans in Claude, and present them from Claude Slides.

Watch out: check the usage rights and disclosure rules for AI-generated images in every market you advertise in.

Plans: ChatGPT Plus ($20), with Claude Pro ($20) for strategy-heavy teams.

Confidence: High for image-heavy teams, moderate for strategy-heavy ones.

8. UI/UX Designers: Prototype In Claude, Test In ChatGPT

Product designers, UX researchers and interaction designers.

The pick: Claude Pro.

Why.

Where ChatGPT helps.

Your workflow.

  • Paste interview notes into a Claude Project, ask for affinity clusters with supporting quotes, then check every quote against the transcript.
  • Move from wireframe to high-fidelity in Claude Design, iterating by selecting elements rather than rewriting prompts.
  • Hand the prototype URL to Astra in ChatGPT Work with a task script and an accessibility checklist.
  • Present findings with Claude Slides.

Watch out: Claude Design, Docs and Slides are still in beta, so keep your source-of-truth design files where they already live.

Plans: Claude Pro ($20), plus ChatGPT Plus if you need imagery.

Confidence: Moderate to high.

9. Visual And Brand Designers: ChatGPT Owns The Image

Alt text: In a bright glass studio, a blue orb sculpts a 3D object of light while an amber orb arranges a brand board.

Illustrators, brand designers, art directors, and 3D artists.

The pick: ChatGPT Plus.

Why.

Your workflow.

  • Explore mood boards and variations in ChatGPT images, then refine by hand in your usual tools.
  • Let Astra in ChatGPT Work drive Blender for quick 3D mock-ups on a sandboxed machine.
  • Write the brand guidelines in Claude Docs and pitch them from Claude Slides.

Watch out: agree with each client, in writing, how AI-generated imagery may be used.

Plans: ChatGPT Plus ($20), with Claude Pro optional.

Confidence: Moderate to high.

10. Researchers: Citations Over Charisma

Academic, policy, market, and independent researchers.

The pick: Claude Pro, or Max 5× if you research every day.

Why.

Where ChatGPT is stronger.

Your workflow.

  • Use ChatGPT deep research for the first wide sweep across hundreds of sources.
  • Move the shortlist into a Claude Project and ask for a synthesis with every claim tied to a source.
  • Have a second pass list only the claims it could not verify, then open those sources yourself.
  • Write the final report in Claude Docs, where co-authors can comment.

Watch out: the no-invented-figures result is Anthropic’s own test, so run it on your own topic before trusting it.

Plans: Claude Pro ($20), plus ChatGPT Plus ($20) for heavy web sweeps.

Confidence: Moderate.

11. Industrial Researchers: Enterprise First, Then Split By Workload

Corporate R&D teams in materials, chemicals, pharma, energy and manufacturing.

The pick: An enterprise plan on either side, then Claude for synthesis and reports and Astra for tool-driven experiments.

Why governance comes first.

Why split the models.

  • OpenAI says Astra can work directly in specialised scientific software to inspect data and explore results, and reports 64.6% for it on Terminal-Bench Science against 58.7% for Opus 5.5 in Anthropic’s own table.
  • Opus 5.5 leads long-context reasoning and SciCode on Artificial Analysis’s head-to-head, and it passed Anthropic’s no-invented-figures report test 16 times out of 18.
  • Biology-heavy work meets Opus 5.5’s Fable-class safeguards unless your organisation joins Anthropic’s Life Sciences Verification Program, and most cybersecurity tasks are re-routed to Opus 4.8.

Your workflow.

  • Run literature and patent landscaping in Claude Research, then turn it into a Claude Doc the whole team co-edits.
  • Give Astra instrument, simulation, and data-cleaning work through ChatGPT Work or Codex on a sandboxed workstation.
  • Connect SharePoint or Drive through Work plugins or Claude connectors, under admin control only.
  • Keep a named human sign-off on every figure that leaves the lab.

Watch out: vendor benchmark wins are vendor-run, so pilot on three of your own finished projects before you buy seats.

Plans: ChatGPT Enterprise, or Claude Enterprise at $20 per seat plus usage at API rates.

Confidence: Moderate.

12. Scientists: Code, Cells And Safeguards

Academic and clinical scientists, from the wet lab to the simulation cluster.

The pick: ChatGPT for the life sciences, Claude for computational science.

Why ChatGPT for the life sciences.

Why Claude for computational science.

Your workflow.

  • Use Astra for protocol questions, instrument software and data inspection.
  • Write and test analysis pipelines in Claude Code, with unit tests for every statistical step.
  • Ask each model to critique the other’s methods section before you submit.
  • Mathematicians should note that OpenAI says Astra helped tighten a prime-gap bound from 240 to 186, with proofs published.

Watch out: NEVER upload identifiable patient data to a consumer plan.

Plans: ChatGPT Plus or Pro for life scientists; Claude Pro or Max for computational scientists.

Confidence: Moderate.

13. Engineers: Astra Knows Its Way Around CAD

Electrical, mechanical, civil and hardware engineers who build physical things.

The pick: ChatGPT.

Why.

Your workflow.

  • Let Astra drive EDA and CAD tools on a sandboxed machine, with you approving every destructive action.
  • Write specifications, calculation reports and design reviews in Claude, where the writing is tighter.
  • For firmware and embedded code, follow the coder section.

Watch out: computer-use agents click fast, so work on copies of project files and keep versioned backups.

Plans: ChatGPT Pro $100 for Astra in chat, or Plus for Astra in Work; add Claude Pro for documentation.

Confidence: Moderate.

14. University Educators: Teach With ChatGPT, Research With Claude

Professors, lecturers and teaching assistants.

The pick: ChatGPT for teaching and students, Claude for your own course materials and scholarship.

Why ChatGPT in the classroom.

  • Study mode is on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, and your students almost certainly have access already.
  • In India, ChatGPT Go is reported at ₹399 a month, the lowest paid step in this article.
  • OpenAI sells ChatGPT Edu for campus-wide deployment, per its pricing FAQ, and voice with video starts on Go for language and lab demonstrations.

Why Claude at your desk.

Your workflow.

  • Build each course as a Claude Project holding the syllabus, readings and rubrics.
  • Generate lecture slides in Claude, then edit every slide by hand.
  • Set assignments that ask students to critique an AI answer, and point them to ChatGPT Study mode for practice.
  • Draft feedback against your rubric with AI, but keep the grade your own decision.

Watch out: Consumer plans on both sides train on content by default with an opt-out, so never upload student records to a personal account.

Plans: Your institution’s ChatGPT Edu or Claude Education plan if offered; otherwise Claude Pro personally.

Confidence: Moderate.

15. Office Users: Follow Your Inbox

People who live in email, spreadsheets, meetings and slide decks.

The pick: ChatGPT Plus, or Go on a budget; Claude Pro if your company runs on Microsoft 365.

Why ChatGPT.

Why Claude in aMicrosoft office.

Your workflow.

  • Keep a pinned Project or custom assistant with your team’s templates and tone.
  • Automate the weekly status report as a scheduled task on whichever platform you choose.
  • Use meeting record mode, or paste the transcript, and ask for decisions, owners and dates only.
  • Check every formula an AI writes into a spreadsheet before you share it.

Watch out: ChatGPT’s Go plan may include ads, and Claude publishes no fixed message count, so a heavy afternoon can hit the five-hour window.

Plans: ChatGPT Plus ($20) or Go ($8); Claude Pro ($20) for Microsoft shops.

Confidence: Moderate.

16. Freelance Consultants: Deliverables Win Clients

Independent consultants, advisers and fractional experts, which is my own profession, so I have some personal pro pointers here.

The pick: Claude Pro, stepping up to Max 5× in heavy months, with ChatGPT Go as a companion.

Why.

Your workflow.

  • Create one Claude Project per client, holding the engagement letter, data and the client’s own style guide.
  • Run discovery in Claude Research and fact-check every figure before it reaches a slide.
  • Draft the report in Docs, generate the deck in Slides, and present straight from Claude.
  • Switch model training off on any personal plan, or move to Claude Team once you subcontract.

Watch out:

  • A deadline week can hit the five-hour window, so keep the new saved rate-limit reset for the night before delivery.
  • In fact, plan to finish all deadlines with a 2-day buffer.
  • Because on heavy work, the five-hour quota can be a huge bottleneck.

Plans: Claude Pro ($17 annual) plus ChatGPT Go ($8).

Confidence: High.

Personal note: this is the exact stack I use.

17. Startup Founders: Two $20 Plans Beat One $200 Plan

Founders and early teams who need to build, sell, and raise money with very little cash.

The pick: Both $20 plans before any $100 tier; if you can only have one, Claude Pro for technical B2B founders and ChatGPT Plus for consumer and marketing-led founders.

Why both.

Your workflow.

  • Customer discovery: a ChatGPT deep-research sweep of the market, then a one-page thesis written in Claude.
  • MVP: build in Claude Code or Codex, deploy a preview, and let Astra click through it.
  • Fundraise: build the model with Claude in Excel through Microsoft 365 and the deck in Claude Slides.
  • Growth: landing pages and creative in ChatGPT, with a scheduled weekly metrics digest.

Watch out: both vendors changed quotas this month, with a 17% Claude Code cut and Pro $200 sign-ups paused, so never build a company process on promotional allowances.

Plans: Claude Pro ($20) plus ChatGPT Plus ($20).

Confidence: High.

Another personal note: This flexibility is why I recommend both these AI subscriptions to every entrepreneur I meet.

18. Executives: Briefings, Not Chatbots

CEOs, CXOs, vice presidents, and board members.

The pick: Claude for briefings and decisions, ChatGPT for voice and meetings, and your company’s enterprise plan for governance.

Why Claude for decisions.

Why ChatGPT for the rest of the day.

Your workflow.

  • Monday morning: an automated weekly brief and five slides from One Claude.
  • Before a board meeting: have Claude draft the memo, then list the three strongest arguments against your own recommendation.
  • After meetings: record, then keep a decision log with owners and dates.
  • Every quarter: have an analyst verify each number the AI produced for you.

Watch out: Astra is off by default on ChatGPT Enterprise until administrators enable it, and personal consumer plans train on content by default.

Plans: Claude Max 5× ($100) personally, alongside your company’s enterprise plan.

Confidence: Moderate.

19. Lawyers: Confidentiality First, Model Second

Litigators, transactional lawyers, in-house counsel, and solo practitioners.

The pick: Claude Team or Enterprise.

Why this plan comes first.

Why Claude on the model.

The caveat.

Your workflow.

  • Keep one matter per Project; privileged material is only available on a Team or Enterprise plan.
  • Ask for every proposition with its citation, then pull and read each authority yourself.
  • Use AI for first drafts of clauses, chronologies and issue lists, never for final advice.
  • If your firm already runs Harvey, pilot Astra inside it before changing anything.

Watch out: a confidently wrong citation is a professional-conduct problem, whichever model produced it.

Plans: Claude Team or Enterprise; Claude Pro with training switched off for solo practitioners handling nothing privileged.

Confidence: Moderate.

20. Financial Analysts: Claude Checks The Maths

Equity, credit, FP&A and investment analysts.

The pick: Claude Pro or Max.

Why.

Where ChatGPT competes.

Your workflow.

  • Build and stress-test models with Claude inside Excel, asking it to explain every formula it writes.
  • Extract figures from large batches of filings with Astra, then reconcile the totals by hand.
  • Draft investment memos in Claude with the bear case written first.

Watch out: vendor-selected finance quotes are marketing, so benchmark on last quarter’s real work before you commit.

Plans: Claude Pro ($20) or Max 5× ($100), plus ChatGPT Plus for Google Sheets teams.

Confidence: Moderate to high.

The Objective Verdict

Consider the following benchmarks.

GDPval-AA grades real deliverables across 44 occupations, and AA-Briefcase grades multi-week knowledge projects with thousands of input files.

On both, Opus 5.5 leads by a wide margin.

So here is the verdict, stated plainly.

Claude Opus 5.5 is the most intelligent model you can subscribe to today, and the best at professional knowledge work.

GPT-6 Astra is the most efficient frontier model per task, and ChatGPT is the broader consumer product.

GPT-6 Sol and Luna own the mid and budget tiers until Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 prove otherwise – and i am confident that they will.

If your work lives in documents, decks, research and spreadsheets –

If you want one usage pool and no ads –

If you can wait a week for Sonnet 5.5 –

Claude is your home.

If you create images every day –

If you want to chat all day without watching a meter –

If your team runs on Google Sheets, Slack plugins, and shareable Sites –

ChatGPT is your home.

Count the rows and the pattern is clear.

Claude wins outright six times.

ChatGPT – three times.

The other 11 roles require both.

Claude wins where the output is a document someone will act on.

ChatGPT wins where the output is an image, a page, a click-through, or sheer conversational volume.

Anthropic has pulled ahead, solidly, with just one single model revamp.

Some commentators are even calling Opus 5.5 the GPT-Astra killer!

When Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 arrive, ChatGPT’s retreat could become a rout.

But I stand by what I said.

In most cases, subscribing to both AI companies is the better call.

Conclusion: The Best Possible Future Is Two Subs

Three and a half weeks.

Three launches from OpenAI.

Three from Anthropic, with two more on the way.

We are living through the fastest competition in the history of software.

And you are the one who wins it.

Astra.

Sol.

Luna.

Opus.

Sonnet.

Haiku.

Underneath the poetry sit two price sheets, $10 and $50 per million tokens for Astra against $4 and $20 for Opus 5.5, and your own workload decides which one is cheaper.

So find your profession above, test both on your real work this week, by God’s grace, keep what serves you, and cancel what does not.

Watch this space, because Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 will reshuffle the middle of this table within weeks.

The future has arrived – and why stick to one subscription if and when you can afford both?

Because even in my own case – professional freelance consulting – that is the best option.

Cheers, and all the best to you in your AI journey!
